FAQ – Subscribers

Can I create my profile editing form for the subscriber profile page? Yes, since version 8.4.1, the subscriber profile page and the subscriber profile form can be fully customized using the shortcodes ([newsletter_profile] and [newsletter_profile_field]). Read the profile page documentation page for all the details.

How to use the “profile URL” tag ({profile_url}).
This tag can be used on your newsletter to create a link to the subscriber’s profile edit form (you can configure it in great detail from the Subscribers/Profile page configuration page). For example, you can add a button and input the URL field with {profile_url}. This tag cannot be used on the site pages (the subscriber is not recognized and the URL cannot be generated).

Bounced subscribers. Bounced emails.
Subscribers with the status “bounced” do not receive newsletters or autoresponder messages. Generally only subscribers with the status set to “confirmed” are taken into account when sending newsletters.

Subscriber custom fields. How can I add custom profile fields to the subscriber?
The custom profile fields can be managed from the Subscription/Custom Fields page. To show the custom fields on the subscription form or the profile editing form, you should make them public and set their visibility on those form configurations. Read the profile page documentation page for all the details.

Can I search the subscriber by custom profile fields? No, it’s not possible, the search is limited to the main fields (first name, last name, email, …).

Import subscribers. How can I import subscribers from another service? To import your subscribers you can simply get an export from another service in CSV format (all providers let you export to that format). Then install the free Import/Export addon and import the file with your subscribers mapping the original fields to the Newsletter’s subscriber fields. That’s all.
To get the Import/Export add-on, simply download it from your account page or install it directly from the Newsletter/Addons page in your blog.

Export. How can I export my subscribers? Can I export the subscribers to another site? Export bounced email addresses. Export bounced subscribers.
Install the free Import/Export addon (use our Addons manager or get it from your account page) which adds all the import and export options to the Newsletter plugin. The export is a standard CSV file that is easily manageable by other services or with Excel.
If you need to transfer the subscribers to another WordPress site, a better way is to migrate some specific database tables. See the migration guide.

Export error. Export 502 bad gateway. When you face shuch an error, the subscribers’ database is too big and the export generation takes loger than the allowed execution or waiting time. There is no much we can do, you can export the contacts directly from the database.

Can I delete all unsubscribed, bounced, or not confirmed contacts? Yes, on the Subscribers/Maintenance panel, you can delete all subscribers that are unsubscribed, bounced, or not confirmed (and perform many other massive operations on your subscribers’ database).

Can I delete all subscribers in a list? Yes, on the Subscribers/Maintenance panel, you can delete all subscribers in a specific list (and perform many other massive operations on your subscribers’ database).

How can I manage inactive subscribers? The Newsletter plugin registers the last time a subscriber made actions like reading a newsletter, clicking on it, or changing its profile. On the subscribers’ maintenance panel, you can run special actions over the subscribers who have been inactive for a specific amount of time to clean up your contact list.

How can I add all subscribers to a list? You can use the Subscribers/Maintenance panel to add all subscribers to a list. With that management tool, you can even delete or remove all subscribers from a list. Or set a list with different conditions.

I want to clean up my subscriber emails to remove invalid addresses.
If you already have a list of invalid or bounced addresses you can use the “Import/Export” addon to import them and set the related subscribers and “bounced”. The second option is to use one of the many email validation services that take in a list of email addresses and return the ones that are not valid or not reachable. Usually, those services have a cost. The third option is to send a newsletter and use the returned error notification to remove the invalid addresses: if you use a “Delivery Addon” that is automatic or you can install the “Bounce Addon” to get those notification processes automatically.

Add a new subscriber or email. Add a subscriber or email to a list.
To add a new subscriber you can go to the Subscribers page and use the “Add new” button. To add it to lists, you first should define one or more lists on the Subscription/Lists page and the check on the subscriber details the list to which it should be connected.

All subscribers deleted, disappeared, or lost after the update. The update can’t produce a side effect of the deletion of the subscribers.
1) Check the Subscriber page and be sure to reset the search filters (text, status, list, …)
2) Ask the provider to check the table wp_newsletter, what’s inside, and if it needs to be repaired

Are there limits on the number of emails or subscribers I can add or import? No, the Newsletter plugin has no limits on the number of subscribers. All subscribers are stored in your site database, hence some limits could be applied by your provider on the database size, but usually, even a large number of subscribers (100,000) does not use too much space.

What does it mean the complaint status for a subscriber? The complain status means the subscriber reported your message, emails, and newsletters as spam or unsolicited emails. That report cannot be collected by the Newsletter plugin, is received and managed by delivery providers like Amazon SES, Sendgrid, and so on, and received by the Newsletter plugin when connected to those providers via one of our delivery add-ons. Not all email delivery services can report back the complaints, sometimes they’re reported as bounces.

How can I create a test subscriber? Test subscribers. Creating test subscribers is easy: you can create a regular subscriber and in his details activate the option “test subscribers”. It will be shown or used when you send test newsletters.
