Hello,
my sending address for newsletters to subscribers is myname@mydomain.ch. My hosting company handles all my mails with SMTP. My WordPress installation sends out all transactional mails without issues. So: Do I still need a WordPress SMTP plugin? Thanks

if not Smtp connection info are set in WordPress, then you’re using php mailer. So yes, it’s always better to use a Smtp plugin with the login info that your hosting provider provides.
