Newsletter Widget – Cannot specify list to ‘Automatically subscribe to’

I cannot find any documentation on configuring the Newsletter widget, which can be added to sidebars and the footer.
I have added the Newsletter widget to my footer, but I do not see a form field next to the label, “Automatically subscribe to”. As a result, subscribers are not added to any of my lists.
I also do not understand what the “Show lists as”, “First dropdown entry label”, and “Lists field label” fields are for.
Please help.
