I have been using The Newsletter Plugin for many years. I originally set it up to use Double-Opt-In. It always worked fine but now I have the following problem:

When a new user signs up for the newsletter, an email is sent to that user with a link. The user clicks on the link and instead of getting the confirmation page displayed he or she now has to authenticate (error 401). There pops up a window requiring username and password.

    The website is: http://www.betterlifemission.org
The page for signing up for the newsletter is: https://www.betterlifemission.org/rundbrief/

As I said there never was a problem before. Users could sign up and the confirmation page was displayed without requiring authentication.

I have checked the settings in the Newsletter plugin, but I don’t see what I would have to change. Could it be that something else (e.g. server settings) are causing this problem?

Any help to point me in the right direction would be appreciated.

Hi, go to Newsletter/Settings/Advanced and change the “action links” from “alternative” to “standard”.
Your /wp-admin path is protected by basic-auth and that blocks even the wp-admin/admin-ajax.php that can be used by non-logged-in users.
Probably that path has been blocked by server configuration for better admin-side protection.
