ParticipantHello,
Love The Newsletter software but we are finding out the Captcha is confusing legitimate people signing up for our newsletter.Since on our site it comes up with a page with just the math formula some of our visitors are confused why they got that, think it’s broken, and don’t finish signing up. This feels like it could possibly be an ADA issue related to cognitive people.
I would turn off the Captcha but it has helped out reducing spam.
Without modifying the hard coded template ( located at includes/antibot-subscription.php ) is there future plans to support putting like a text message on the screen, a title, or at least something so our users are not confused by this randomness.
Thanks!

KeymasterHello Brian,
did you also open a ticket on this matter? If yes, we’ll reply there, thank you.

ParticipantHi there, I am getting the same question from a few subscribers who are confused why there is a math problem. Is there a way to implement another kind of Captcha?

ParticipantHello,
We put our new site online on Monday, which includes WordPress and the Newsletter plugin. Saw a series of spammy subscriptions yesterday and decided to activate the Captcha.
Yeah, just the math formula, without any context, is not user friendly…

Participantfyi Bruno I’m asking them in a ticket how many times people can attempt to log in before they get on the blacklist. Then at least I could warn people to stop after a certain number of attempts.

ParticipantFor what it is worth, this is what I’m asking our dev to put by the subscribe form for now:
After clicking Subscribe, solve the simple math problem to confirm you’re human and not one of the bots who try to break into sites. Don’t click multiple times; this may block you. Need help? Email news@thecascadian.com with a screenshot if possible.

ParticipantHi, I’ve had a third person blocked. I think I’m going to remove the captcha until someone answers my question on how to unblock them. but that makes me wonder, what exactly is the harm of all the bots now being able to sign up? Can anyone tell me what damage that actually does?
Thanks,

KeymasterHello Walter,
generally speaking, spam subscriptions clutter your inbox, wasting resources and time. They may also aim to inject malicious code or to perform backlinking to their websites.
Please read our documentation article to learn more on how Newsletter prevents those kind of subscriptions: https://www.thenewsletterplugin.com/documentation/subscription/antiflood/

ParticipantMichael, unless there’s some other issue, Newsletter’s Captcha sometimes prevents subscriptions alright, but not spammers, just people trying to sign up. Not everyone knows why a random math problem seems to come up.
Today, I watched a guy get blacklisted while trying to sign in twice from my own phone.
We currently assemble and send the Newsletter through your plugin and send it out via Brevo. Is it possible for assemble the newsletter through your plugin but have the subscriber database managed by Brevo?December 12, 2025 at 7:45 am #351991Michael
KeymasterHello,
no, that’s not possible. If you find the captcha confusing for your users, just deactivate it.
